The mural on the wall behind McDonald's is coming along quickly. The plan includes depictions of Mayfield's history, inclding some of the grand houses and also its industrial history

Weekend 12th and 13th

This weekend there will be a permaculture adventure at Webb park, starting at 10:30. Then on Sunday the graffitti project gets its next coat of paint, so come down and have a look, we'll be at the wall behind the McDonalds on Maitland Road.

In other news..the skatepark has hit a few hurdles but should be under way again soon. Keep an eye out for pictures posted here as it gets under way.

This week I spoke to the Mayfield Mainstreet co-ordinator, Kathie Heyman about getting a presence in Mayfield. This will probably be in the form of a shop window and some space for people to come and find out about the project, so we are working on a display complete with many pictures both historic and contemporary, and some bright murals by local school children.

This Saturday some local graffitti artists will begin work on the wall behind McDonalds on Maitland Road. I'll be there interview willing victims, and I'm looking foward to seeing the work getting underway.

The following weekend, (Friday and Saturday evenings) sees the permaculture/community garden get under way in Webb Park. The garden has received a lot of interest, so I am anticipating cracking progress!

And finally, I am presenting a short seminar about the Mayfield project at the University of Newcastle on the morning of the 11th of November. Anyone interested in attending can send me an e mail from this website for the details.

Welcome to the Mayfield Project!

This blog details an ongoing project about Mayfield, a large suburb in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. The Mayfield project examines the ways in which the residents of Mayfield perceive their suburb, the parts that hold significance for them, and the way they live their lives in the suburb's spaces.

This blog will be updated regularly with information about the project, its progression and photos documenting some of the spaces and places in Mayfield, from the rapidly changing areas, such as thenew skatepark at Dangar Park, to the ones that have stayed the same for generations, like some of the stately homes on The Hill.

Project details

The Mayfield Project is officially called: An analysis of cultural planning and placemaking in an Australian city. The project is part of a PhD through the Cultural Industries and Practices Unit (CIPS) at the University of Newcastle, in conjunction with the Newcastle City Council. I am the principle researcher, (Fiona Grubb) and will be updating this blog.
